In Philoctetes by Sophocles, there is a reference to the father of Odysseus (rumoured to have been Sisyphus, and not Laërtes, whom we know as the father in the Odyssey) upon having returned from the dead. In another version of the myth, Persephone was tricked by Sisyphus that he had been conducted to Tartarus by mistake, and so she ordered that he be released. When Sisyphus refused to return to the underworld, he was forcibly dragged back there by Hermes. Once back in Ephyra, the spirit of Sisyphus scolded his wife for not burying his body and giving it a proper funeral as a loving wife should. Complaining to Persephone that this was a sign of his wife's disrespect for him, Sisyphus persuaded her to allow him to return to the upper world. This caused Sisyphus to end up on the shores of the river Styx when he was brought to the underworld. īefore Sisyphus died, he had told his wife to throw his naked corpse into the middle of the public square (purportedly as a test of his wife's love for him). He then had no choice but to release Hades. The gods finally threatened to make life so miserable for Sisyphus that he would wish he were dead. Consequently, sacrifices could not be made to the gods, and those that were old and sick were suffering. As long as Hades was trapped, nobody could die. In some versions, Hades was sent to chain Sisyphus and was chained himself. The exasperated Ares intervened, freeing Thanatos, enabling deaths to happen again and turned Sisyphus over to him. Ares, the god of war, became annoyed that his battles had lost their fun because his opponents would not die. Once Thanatos was bound by the strong chains, no one died on Earth, causing an uproar. As Thanatos was granting him his wish, Sisyphus seized the opportunity and trapped Thanatos in the chains instead. Sisyphus slyly asked Thanatos to demonstrate how the chains worked. Sisyphus was curious as to why Charon, whose job it was to guide souls to the underworld, had not appeared on this occasion. Zeus ordered Thanatos to chain Sisyphus in Tartarus. Sisyphus betrayed one of Zeus' secrets by revealing the whereabouts of the Asopid Aegina to her father, the river god Asopus, in return for causing a spring to flow on the Corinthian acropolis. He seduced Salmoneus' daughter Tyro in one of his plots to kill Salmoneus, only for Tyro to slay their children when she discovered that Sisyphus was planning on using them to eventually dethrone her father. From Homer onward, Sisyphus was famed as the craftiest of men. Sisyphus and his brother Salmoneus were known to hate each other, and Sisyphus consulted the Oracle of Delphi on just how to kill Salmoneus without incurring any severe consequences for himself. He took pleasure in these killings because they allowed him to maintain his iron-fisted rule. He killed guests and travelers in his palace, a violation of guest-obligations, which fell under Zeus' domain, thus angering the god. King Sisyphus promoted navigation and commerce but was avaricious and deceitful. Sisyphus was the founder and first king of Ephyra (supposedly the original name of Corinth). In other versions of the myth, Sisyphus was the true father of Odysseus by Anticleia instead of Laërtes. Another account related that Minyas was Sisyphus's son instead. He was the grandfather of Bellerophon through Glaucus and of Minyas, founder of Orchomenus, through Almus. Sisyphus married the Pleiad Merope by whom he became the father of Ornytion ( Porphyrion ), Glaucus, Thersander and Almus. He was the brother of Athamas, Salmoneus, Cretheus, Perieres, Deioneus, Magnes, Calyce, Canace, Alcyone, Pisidice and Perimede. Sisyphus was formerly a Thessalian prince as the son of King Aeolus of Aeolia and Enarete, daughter of Deimachus. German mythographer Otto Gruppe thought that the name derived from sisys (σίσυς, "a goat's skin"), in reference to a rain-charm in which goats' skins were used. Beekes has suggested a pre-Greek origin and a connection with the root of the word sophos (σοφός, "wise"). Through the classical influence on modern culture, tasks that are both laborious and futile are therefore described as Sisyphean ( / s ɪ s ɪ ˈ f iː ən/). Hades punished him for cheating death twice by forcing him to roll an immense boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down every time it neared the top, repeating this action for eternity. In Greek mythology, Sisyphus or Sisyphos ( / ˈ s ɪ s ɪ f ə s/ Ancient Greek: Σίσυφος Sísyphos) was the founder and king of Ephyra (now known as Corinth). Before continuing to read the rest of this article you may want to dive into light resistance and rejection technologies.īut even without specific technologies designed to enhance surfaces, what is it about a projection screen in general that makes it better than just using a readily-available white wall? Moreover, how do you choose the right screen without breaking the bank? Let's discuss the three main aspects of screens: material, size, and style. Notably, image contrast, resolution, and color reproduction suffer the most from using a surface not intended for projection.Īctually, we have an entire article dedicated to technological developments that have given us light rejecting surfaces and other advancements that promote superior image quality. Projecting onto a wall or just a white surface has a significant negative impact on image quality. Sometimes, after having invested in a top of the line projector, people forego a proper projection screen altogether. However, a great projector is only one piece in a multi-element projection system, as the screen onto which you display makes a world of difference. If you care about enjoying your video content in the best quality possible, then you most likely already know that a projector is unbeatable for a truly cinematic experience. What’s different about the LS is that it’s lighter that’s really the only difference. What is the difference between Korg Kronos and Korg Kronos LS? The application of SweepCluster in two real datasets from the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus suis showed that the impact of pre-selection was dramatic and significantly reduced the uninformative signals. Performance evaluation using simulation data showed that the sensitivity and specificity of the clustering algorithm in SweepCluster is above 90%. The pre-selection of polymorphisms is based on their genetic signatures, such as elevated population subdivision, excessive linkage disequilibrium, or significant phenotype association. Our method searches for gene regions with a high level of spatial clustering of pre-selected polymorphisms in genotype datasets assuming a null distribution model of neutral selection. We proposed a novel gene-centric and spatial-aware approach for identifying gene-specific sweeps in prokaryotes and implemented it in a python tool SweepCluster. Furthermore, some challenges have not been sufficiently addressed by the methods, such as the low spatial resolution of sweep regions and lack of consideration of the spatial distribution of mutations. However, current methods were mainly developed for detecting selective sweeps in eukaryotic data of sparse genotypes and are not readily applicable to prokaryotic data. Therefore, identifying gene-specific sweeps in microorganisms will not only provide insights into the evolutionary mechanisms, but also unravel potential genetic markers associated with biological phenotypes. It has been demonstrated to play important roles in ecological differentiation or phenotypic divergence in microbial populations. The gene-specific sweep is a selection process where an advantageous mutation along with the nearby neutral sites in a gene region increases the frequency in the population. I just edited my post there of last nightĪt the moment Softmaker looks pretty good in terms of MSO compatibility and Zotero (IF there is the commercial justification for them to keep it maintained) and the UI is closer to the MSO 2016 that I am used to (Tabbed in LO is similar, but different enough that it makes more sense for me to invest in familiarising myself with the default UI which is used more in support explanations such as forums) Either way, before committing to TextMaker, I would at the very least post on their forums to find out if there is anyone there that will be able to provide Zotero support if you discover any bugs and if they are planning to keep the plugin up to date with Zotero going forward.Įither way, before committing to TextMaker, I would at the very least post on their forums to find out if there is anyone there that will be able to provide Zotero support if you discover any bugs and if they are planning to keep the plugin up to date with Zotero going forward. You can check this simply by citing something in LibreOffice and TextMaker and comparing the bibliography output in a few different citation styles. When they initially implemented their plugin, they had some incompleteness with bibliography formatting and I haven't checked if they've fixed those. Regarding TextMaker, since they have not updated their plugin for Zotero 6, you won't be able to insert Zotero notes into your document, but that may not be an issue for you. For collaborative work you should generally use a group library. We don't technically recommend this, but it is possible. The item information missing from your library will come from the one stored in the document along with citations. You can collaboratively cite in the same document with multiple Zotero libraries. But I guess if they cite something they could send me the RIS files or equivalent? If they do use Zotero, they will have their own library anyway, with a different set of references. Still not decided tho, as Libre Office is FOSS, which is good (if I switch to it I will make a suitable donation - its not about the money for me), but seems from my initial research that Softmaker might be more robust in terms of Zotero than LO? When I open the files in Libre Office on Linux the Zotero citations are flattened I did not try Softmaker on Windows as I dont intend to do that - I want to be free of Windows Not an exhaustive test, but its encouraging So, that seems to show a good level of robustness for Zotero citations between Softmaker and Word I think So I edited the citation and (using classic view as I prefer that) removed all except 4 of them, then saved it under another name, File 3.docx Then I rebooted into Linux and opened File2.docx in Softmaker and all was good So I edited the citation and (using classic view as I prefer that) removed 36 of them, then saved it under another name, File 2.docx Then I opened that in Word in Win 10 and all was good I just made a file in Softmaker on ArchLabs Linux with just a title and a citation of 66 papers and generated the bibliography and then saved it as a Microsoft Word File 1.docx file In fact, most genuine pieces won't show the word "Murano." Murano glass is identifiable by its richly layered colors and characteristic gold or silver flecks inside the glass. Seeing the word "Murano" on a glass decorative object doesn't mean that it is authentic. Use trusted online resources to determine if the maker's location is or was in Murano, in northeastern Italy. Authentic Murano glass will often, but not always, include labels with the name of the workshop, the signature of the glass master and a certificate of authenticity. Otherwise, look for the signature of the artist or factory on the piece. To tell if a glass rooster is Murano, you can look for markings and other details to try and determine the maker, but the best way to determine authenticity is to enlist the help of an antiques dealer or Murano glass expert. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Murano glassware from some of the world’s top sellers. Because it can be difficult to predict how the value of items will change over time, choose decorative objects that appeal to you. If you need assistance authenticating a particular vase, you may wish to enlist the help of a certified appraiser or experienced antiques dealer. Bear in mind that authentic pieces normally do not have the word "Murano" on their labels. Then, use trusted online resources to determine if the workshop is in Murano, Italy. To tell if a Murano glass vase is real, look for the name of the shop that produced it on the bottom. The first step in determining if your Murano glass object has held its value is determining its authenticity. Antique Murano art glass can fetch thousands of dollars at auction depending on the brand, the history of the work, the technique used to design the piece and more. Whether Murano glass holds its value depends on a variety of factors, including how well it’s cared for as well as demand and supply. Get started on decorating with sculpture now - find figurative sculptures, animal sculptures and more on 1stDibs today. If you choose a sculpture with dramatic design elements, such as sharp angles or bright colors, for example, try to better integrate this new addition by echoing those elements in the rest of your room’s design. And make sure you know how the size and form of the sculpture will affect your space in whole. When incorporating sculpture into the design of your home - be it the playful work of auction hero and multimedia visionary KAWS, contemporary fiber art from Connecticut dealer browngrotta arts or still-life sculpture on a budget - consider proper lighting, which can bring out the distinctive aspects of your piece that deserve attention. If an antique or more dramatic piece doesn’t feel like you, why not opt for works comprising plastic, fiberglass or other more modern materials? You can embrace a dramatic piece by making it the focal point of the room, or you can choose to incorporate several elements made out of the same material to create harmony in your space. Fortunately, there are many ways for a seemingly incongruous piece to fit in with the rest of your room’s theme. Instead, they invoke a mood or scene without directly stating what they are portraying.īusts made of stone or metal may not seem like a good fit for your existing decor. According to designer Timothy Corrigan, “They give humanity in a way that a more abstract sculpture can’t give.” Abstract sculptures, on the other hand, are not meant to show something specific. And while decorating with busts, which are sculpted or cast figurative works, hasn’t exactly topped the list of design trends every year, busts are back. Figurative sculptures are representational works that portray a specific person, animal or object. By introducing a sculptural work as a decorative finish to any interior, you’re making a statement, whether you tend toward the dramatic or prefer to keep things casual with modest, understated art.Ī single, one-of-a-kind three-dimensional figurative sculpture mounted on your dining room wall is a guaranteed conversation piece, while a trio of abstract works arranged on your living room bookshelves can add spontaneity to the collection of first-edition novels or artist monographs you’re displaying as well as draw attention to them. Styling your home with vintage, new and antique sculptures means adding a touch that can meaningfully transform the space.
